We all feel down sometimes but there are many who constantly feel depressed. What is depression? It can be a mood, a lack of energy or a lack of motivation. Unfortunately because it can take many forms it is not always recognized and those who suffer depression are often too embarrassed to admit it. The first step is to try to categorize your depression- is it exogenous- coming from without ( e.g. death of a loved one, loss of job, moving) or is in endogenous- coming from within? Endogenous depression is also called biochemical depression.

Step 1- acknowledge that you are feeling blue or depressed.

Step 2- Do not be embarrassed or hide.

Step 3- Talk to a medical professional as well as your family and friends.

Did you know that often depression has a basis in nutrition? Chemicals and additives in foods can cause depression; nutritional deficiencies caused by not eating good quality food also contribute to depression. The B vitamins ( especially niacin, pyridoxine, B12 and folic acid), vitamin C, zinc and manganese all support the production of the "feel good" neurotransmitters.

Food allergies/ reactions can also contribute greatly to depression. ELIMINATION OF CHEMICALS, SUGAR AND REFINED FOODS IS IMPORTANT.

Regular, moderate exercise and avoidance of stimulants such as caffeine, tobacco and alcohol also help reduce depression.

Have your thyroid checked- hypothyroidism can contribute to depression.

These are just a few of the areas that research has shown will contribute or help deal with depression.
